Ontario Content Update!

ISSUE #3:APRIL 2010

Lakeshore Power Systems is constantly seeking manufacturers that will be entering Ontario, or are already here and are expanding their product lines. We would like to update you on our recent additions here.

NEW! UNIRAC SolarMount Standard rails and associated extruded components are now made in Ontario!

Why choose Unirac? Three main reasons:

Newsletter Spotlight
Unirac SolarMount now Ontario Domestic Content Compliant!

  1. Engineering! Feedback from our dealers is that most municipalities are requiring engineered solutions for the mounting system. Unirac mounting systems are supported by the most extensive engineering support available on the market today,.
  2. Versatility! SolarMount Standard profiles are used in over 85% of all Unirac mounting systems; from flush mount, to tilt (for ground and flat roof applications), to ground mounted pole or frame structures.
  3. Availability! We stock SolarMount Standard (and CLICKSYS) profiles and associated components in house, which means you can get your install going fast!

NEW! Solectria Renewables full product line of solar grid tie inverters now Ontario domestic content compliant, and available!

Why Choose Solectria?

  1. Wide DC input voltage range means greater flexibility in string sizing
  2. Integrated DC disconnect (3-5.3 kW versions) may mean one less piece of equipment needed in the field
  3. Local and web based monitoring available
  4. Industry leading performance and warranty
  5. Lower price

6. Allows for flexibilty in solar module mounting product selection. If you gain points with respect to domestic content on the inverter, you are free (for 2010) to select whichever mounting solution best fits your needs, including Unirac CLICKSYS, the fastest and least expensive flush roof mount racking on the market today!

Things to Think About::

  1. Multi-Contact branch distribution connectors continue to be in short supply in North America. We don't have an ETA on this product yet, but will let you all know when they become available again!
  2. Delta LA arrestors still have cUL listing, but only as a component part. This means that they can't be sold unless they are pre-installed and feild certified. Also, they no longer bear the cUR stamp on them, so picky inspectors might not want them anyway.
  3. Tinned copper lay-in lugs are the only lay-in lug rated for direct burial, or outdoor use. Cheap aluminum lay-in lugs are not certified for exterior applications (only to be used inside an electrical enclosure).
  4. When to use a roof mounted combiner box? While individual string overcurrent protection is required on any installation with more than 2 strings we can't see the down side in installing combiner boxes with individual string overcurrent protection for every installation! Better to be safe than sorry.
  5. When should you use QuickMount PV flashings? Let's face it: QuickMounts are expensive. In fact, the cost of the mounts may almost double the price of an average flush mount PV array racking system, leaving both you and your customers a bit put-off. My advice is to put the decision to use (or not use) these flashings firmly on your customers' shoulders. I would let them know the cost with, or without integrated flashings. I would also insist that if they choose to not use integrated flashings then they must sign a waiver to the fact that integrated flashings were offered to them by you, and that they (the client) chose to save money and not install them. Also, if they are not used, and leaks are discoved (within the installation warranty time period), then such leaks are not covered under your installation warranty, and any material and labour needed to fix the leak would be charged separately. In my opinion, you have two issues here. One is that in a competivie bid situation, you don't want to loose the job to someone that hasn't included the same cost of equipment that you have, and two; you need to protect yourself in the event that one of your customers insists on not spending the extra money.
